AI-Assisted Faculty Development Hub Live
A custom learning management system — the UCLA DGSOM Faculty Development Hub at hub.meded-hub.org — that both teaches faculty about AI and uses AI to do the teaching.
What it contains
- Foundations of AI in Medical Education (FAME) — a five-session recorded course series with synchronized slides, access-controlled video, transcripts, and take-home exercises, covering using AI to create curricula, assessments, teaching materials, and AI tutors.
- An AI tutor grounded in the course — faculty can ask questions and get answers built only from course content, with automatically validated citations back to the exact session and slide. Answers are gated by an evaluation suite before any tutor change ships.
- AI video communication training — live simulated-mentee practice conversations with structured debriefs (see the communication coach project).
- Leadership analytics — cohort-level dashboards for education leadership: participation, progression, and practice outcomes, with per-faculty drill-down protected by step-up authentication and audit logging.
Privacy-first by design
The Hub is built around a standing rule we call the 30-day rule: faculty and learner data never reaches an AI model or external service that retains it beyond 30 days or trains on it. Every vendor data flow is mapped and reviewed. Two design commitments worth noting:
- Tutor question content is never linked to faculty identity — enforced at the database-permission level, not just in application code, so leadership can see engagement without ever seeing who asked what.
- The platform underwent multiple rounds of independent design review, a full-stack security audit with documented remediation, and threat modeling before production use.
Why it matters
Faculty development in AI has a bootstrapping problem: the people who must teach AI first need to learn it, at scale, without adding meetings. A platform that delivers the training, answers questions with grounded citations, provides deliberate practice, and shows leadership real outcomes — while holding a strict privacy line — is our working model for how schools can close that gap.
